Chainsaw Safety: The Non-Negotiables

Chainsaws are remarkable tools — and remarkably dangerous ones. In the UK and Isle of Man, chainsaw injuries still occur with alarming regularity, and almost all are preventable with proper training, equipment, and attitude.
Personal Protective Equipment
There are no shortcuts with PPE. Every single time you pick up a chainsaw, you need:
- **Helmet** with integral visor and ear defenders
- **Chainsaw trousers or chaps** (Type A minimum for cross-cutting, Type C for felling)
- **Chainsaw boots** with steel toecap and chainsaw protection
- **Gloves** designed for chainsaw use
- **High-visibility clothing** if working near roads or with others
Training and Certification
It is a legal requirement for anyone using a chainsaw at work to be trained and certified. Even if you're a private landowner, we strongly recommend completing at least a basic chainsaw course before operating a chainsaw.
Our Lantra-accredited courses on the Isle of Man provide hands-on training in safe chainsaw operation, from basic maintenance and cross-cutting through to comprehensive felling. Contact us to discuss which course is right for you.
