BS5837 Assessment for Residential Development, Douglas

The Challenge

A proposed residential development on a site bordered by mature trees required a full BS5837 assessment. Several high-value trees were within the development footprint, and the planning authority required robust evidence that retained trees would be protected throughout construction.

Our Approach

We carried out a detailed tree survey categorising all specimens according to BS5837:2012. An arboricultural impact assessment identified where the proposed layout conflicted with tree root protection areas. We worked closely with the architect to recommend design modifications that retained the most valuable trees while achieving the development's objectives. Tree protection plans and method statements were produced for the construction phase.

The Outcome

Planning permission was granted with tree-related conditions based on our recommendations. The development proceeded with all Category A and B trees retained, and post-construction monitoring confirmed no adverse effects on retained trees.
