Veteran Oak Management Plan, Ballaugh
The Challenge
A magnificent 300-year-old oak in a churchyard setting showed signs of advanced internal decay while remaining biologically viable. The parish needed to balance their duty of care to the public with the ecological and heritage value of this irreplaceable specimen.
Our Approach
A detailed assessment was conducted including aerial inspection, decay detection, and habitat evaluation. The management plan adopted a minimal-intervention philosophy, retaining as much deadwood and habitat value as possible while reducing risk through targeted crown reduction and load mitigation. A monitoring schedule was established to track the tree's condition over time.
The Outcome
The veteran oak was retained with sympathetic management. The parish received clear guidance on ongoing monitoring responsibilities, and the tree continues to support a thriving ecosystem of lichens, invertebrates, and cavity-nesting birds.
