Woodland Establishment Plan, Laxey
The Challenge
A landowner wished to convert 5 acres of former grazing land into native woodland, contributing to the Isle of Man's biodiversity targets while creating a legacy for future generations. The exposed upland site presented challenges for successful establishment.
Our Approach
We developed a detailed planting plan using native Manx provenance species where available, selected for resilience to the site's exposure and soil conditions. The design incorporated open glades, wet features, and edge habitats to maximise biodiversity. A five-year aftercare programme was specified including protection, weed management, and replacement planting.
The Outcome
Over 2,000 native trees and shrubs were planted across the site. Year-three monitoring showed over 85% survival rate, and natural regeneration of birch and willow is already supplementing the planted stock. Early-successional bird species are colonising the site.
